A Potted History of Cosmetics


For thousands of years, people have been using cosmetics and evidence has been found of this from as long ago as 4,000 BC during the Ancient Egyptian period. Rich and poor alike all wore eye makeup, the most common being Kohl which was used as an eye liner, this was thought to improve the eyesight and ward off evil spirits. The ancient Romans and Greeks also used cosmetics and during the ancient Roman period, these were produced and applied by female slaves called Cosmetae. Kohl was composed of antimony (a toxic grey metalloid), ashes or soot and sometimes saffron which improved the scent. It was applied using a rounded stick which was first dipped in oil or water, then dipped in the kohl. Eyebrows were also painted and darkened using antimony or soot.

The Egyptians, with their strikingly painted faces, believed that their appearance and sweet scented bodies brought them closer to their gods, and they took enormous pride in their cleanliness and makeup. The Greeks, however, were much vainer and looking and smelling good for each other was more important than how they presented themselves to their gods. Later the Romans took cosmetics to another level and with their brazen lifestyles, used makeup and oils for no other purpose than that of enhancing their sexual pleasures.

Despite their self indulgence, the Romans did discover medicinal treatments and found that plagues could be combated by burning aromatic gums and resins. The word perfume actually derived from Roman times: "Per" is Latin for 'through' and "fumum" means 'smoke' and together 'per fumum' translates as the practice of transforming a substance into something airborne through nebulisation. 

As years have gone by, makeup and cosmetics have become more and more fashionable, and as ballet, theatre and later television became popular, the whole world was influenced by the media and the representations of beauty ideals. Images of Japanese geisha, excessively made up 1920s flappers, 'Twiggy's' iconic 1960s look, David Bowie's 1970s 'Ziggy Stardust' image, Lady Gaga's elaborate use of makeup, leads us to ask ourselves why do we wear makeup. Is it to enhance natural beauty, for religious reasons, to attract the opposite sex, or to create a work of art on the body? 

Whatever our reasons, the world just would not be the same without the use of our lotions, potions, paints, perfumes and cosmetics. With the creation of the Internet, we do not have to visit department stores for our beauty products as they are now widely available on-line. We have a lot to thank the Egyptians for, and the creation of cosmetics is one of them, which not only changed the appearance of the human body, but made it much sweeter smelling too!

The significance of having an effective fitness workout routine cannot be overlooked. As per now, the internet is flooded with countless work out routines. You should however be able to key out a program that not only delivers results but also places emphasis on health. Barry Bonds
Barry Lamar Bonds was born july 24, 1964 is an American former Major League Baseball outfielder. Bonds played from 1986 to 2007, for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants
Bonds' statistical records during his baseball career would place him among the greatest baseball players of all-time and he has a record-setting seven Most Valuable Player awards, including a record-setting four consecutive MVPs He's won six NL MVP awards in total.

"Babe" Ruth
George Herman Ruth, Jr. born february 6, 1895 and died in august 16, 1948.
Best known as "Babe" Ruth and nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat"
My favorite "Babe" moment was when he hit the first home run in "Yankee Stadium" on April 18 1923
He hit 714 home runs during his career.
While everyone remembers Ruth as a slugger, it's worth noting that he started his career as a pitcher

Joe DiMaggio
Joseph Paul "Joe" DiMaggio was born november 25, 1914 and died in March 8, 1999
Nicknamed "Joltin' Joe" and "The Yankee Clipper"
DiMaggio was a three-time MVP winner and 13-time All-Star and the only player to be selected for the All-Star Game in every season he played.
At Baseball's Centennial Celebration in 1969, DiMaggio was named the "Greatest Living Player" in the history of the game.
Although to Yankee fans, DiMaggio is a hero, to the team's management, he was a pain in the neck. DiMaggio disrespected manager Casey Stengel, and frequently sparred with Yankee brass over his salary.
DiMaggio married Marilyn Monroe  on January 14, 1954 in San Francisco City Hall.

Ty Cobb
Tyrus Raymond "Ty" Cobb was born in december 18, 1886 and died in july 17, 1961
Nicknamed "The Georgia Peach"
As an outfielder and first baseman Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia A's during his 24-year career. It's safe to say that no other hitter will match Cobb's accomplishments.
Cobb's legacy as an athlete has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament and aggressive playing style, which was described by the Detroit Free Press as "daring to the point of dementia."

Karch Kiraly is arguably the greatest volleyball player in history of the sport.
Karch Kiraly has the most professional career beach volleyball tournament victories, in fact,  he won a staggering 148 titles.
Karch Kiraly is also the only volleyball player in the world to win three gold medals (1984, 1988, 1996).
Karch Kiraly is known as the sparkplug that inspired the 1984 and 1988 USA Menís Olympic Volleyball Teams by playing outstanding volleyball and encouraging his teammates to play their best.
Wearing his trade mark hot pink hat, Karch Kiraly was an easily recognizable man during all his days playing volleyball on the beach.

Misty May Treanor:

Misty May Treanor is arguably the very best all-around skilled women player in beach volleyball ever to play the sport.
Misty May Treanor is also the current all-time wins leader.
Misty May was voted the  Most Valuable Player in the years 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Misty May is currently the winningest Female Beach Volleyball Player of all time.
Fifteen consecutive beach tournament victories gives her the the world record for most consecutive victories. Misty May also holds the world record for consecutive match victories, 90.
Misty May Treanor is one of only three players to be named a two-time AVCA National Player of the Year.

Steve Timmons:

During the 80's, Steve Timmons wore at all times a wild red flat top that made him the most identifiable indoor volleyball player in the world.
Considered a pioneer of back row hitting, Steve Timmons combined with his outstanding front row attacking skills made him an unstoppable force.
In 1984, Steve Timmons was named MVP of the Olympics by the FIVB after leading USA to a Gold medal. His wife is Debbe Dunning, who played Heidi on the TV show "Home Improvement."

Kerri Walsh:

Kerri Walsh currently partners with Misty May Treanor as the best women's beach volleyball team in the world and likely the two most famous volleyball players.  hatheyd an astonishing win streak of 38 matches in their first year on the AVP Tour.
Kerri and Misty had an unbelievable 89 match win streak on the AVP Tour and the international circuit between 2003 and 2004.
Walsh is a two-time AVP MVP (2003, 2004).
Kerri Walsh has lead the AVP in both blocks and hitting percentage the last two AVP seasons.
Walsh currently endorses the therapeutic athletic tape KT Tape (Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape).
Walsh is married to fellow pro-beach volleyball player Casey Jennings
